2008 Festival Brochure

2008 Brochure & Schedule of Events

IN THE HEART OF HISTORIC DOWNTOWN NAPPANEE, INDIANA

From a festival of apple blossoms to cherry, strawberry and blueberry, the grandest of all - the apple festival - will be in Nappanee, IN starting Thursday, 5:00 p.m., Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept 21, 6:00 p.m., 2008. An abundance of craft, commercial, food booths and the popular Napple Store will offer visitors an ample amount of information, shopping options, a festival feast and great souvenirs.

Thursday’s showcase will include the ever-popular kid’s puppet show with Grandpa Cratchet, carnival rides and two stages of evening entertainment. Wild Rodeo and the Miss Apple Blossom Scholarship Pageant will take place in the NIPSCO tent and Honky Tonk entertainment on the Embarq Stage. COLTS in MOTION will be promoting and selling items with their 42’ traveling museum from 5-7 p.m.

Friday will include a fall furniture festival and haystack supper, helicopter rides, senior bingo, farm tractor and antique farm equipment show, and a variety of singing, dancing and good listening at the entertainment stages. And, what would be an apple festival without the world’s famous 7’ baked apple pie, which will be ready to eat on Friday morning.

Saturday opens with a pancake and sausage breakfast, parade, antique tractor and garden tractor pull, apple butter demonstration, fire truck and apparatus show, child ID, bike ride, classic car cruise in and entertainment on two stages from 12-10 pm. There will be Mr. Crabapple and Apple Dumpling contests, apple baking, apple peeling, pie eating, frog jumping, horse shoe pitching, cross cut saw, adult and kids pedal pull contests, apple cider cup challenge, pets & pals parade of fashion, as well as a lip-smackin’ BBQ challenge, going on throughout the day. An airplane fly over with the Flying Hooligans will precede the grand parade, which closes down U.S. 6 Saturday morning. These planes can then be viewed at the afternoon Wings and Wheels event at the Nappanee Municipal Airport along with a car, truck and motorcycle show. Youngsters age 8-18 can earn their Young Eagle certificate in a free, first time small airplane ride. More activities include viewing medical helicopters, display and military aircraft and perhaps trying out the popular flight simulators. Todd Beer, former Air Force One pilot to President George Bush and Nappanee native, will be on hand signing autographs and visiting with Young Eagles and patrons.

Sunday events begin with a community church service at the Depot Plaza entertainment tent followed by three hours of gospel music. Baby Olympics, talent show, road run, raffle drawing and awards headline the last day of the festival.

The 33rd annual festival will attract over 60,000 people and is made possible through the financial support of local retail sponsorships, a dedicated group of volunteers, Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce and City of Nappanee employees.
